Q: Do I need to be an atheist to join?
A: No! We have many religious members including one who is on our leadership board. The first goal in our mission statement is to advance "free, uncensored and rational discussion." We have no creed and do not advance any particular conclusions. A secondary goal of ours is to provide a community and social outlet for the nonreligious at Penn, but that should not be construed in an exclusionary way. Religious students were among our founders in 2007 and continue to be active participants in Secular Penn.
Q: What sorts of things does Secular Penn do?
A: We are here for our members, so we tend to follow our interests. Bi-weekly discussion meetings have historically been our most regular activity. Starting Spring 2009 we are holding weekly teas with professors on Fridays. In the past we have held anti-superstition parties, joint events with campus religious groups, and a presentation and book signing with philosopher Austin Dacey, to name a few events.
Q: Do all your speakers advocate atheism?
A: No, not remotely. Most of our speakers do not declare religious views, and there have been as many theists as atheists. Speakers are invited if they have expertise in an area that's of interest to our members. Religious persuasion is not a factor.
